Kodak announced the recipients of their annual Eastman Scholarship today and UPRUSH was a winner of one of the product grants. Thank you to the faculty in the RTF department at UT for nominating the film!
I’m currently production designing for my good friend, Soham Mehta, on his film FATAKRA. We’ve been location scouting mostly in the outlying areas southeast of Austin which I’ve discovered are beautfiul this time of year. Scouting in 103 degree weather does have some benefits, apparently.
The factory is this amazing peanut processing plant in Giddings, Texas where we’ll be doing the bulk of our shooting. Giddings is small Texas town surrounded by farmland that benefited from an oil boom in the 1980s but is now pretty sleepy. It also has the widest streets I’ve seen in Texas. If you pass through, stop by Mel’s Diner (not from the 70s sitcom Alice) and have a slice of their coconut pie… amazing!

This festival was a blast, and I saw some great films. The shorts programs, including the one my film was in, were really strong and
inspiring. Some of my favorites included MY MOM SMOKES WEED by Clay Liford. The title explains a lot but I suggest taking a look at the trailer here. Two other amazing short films were Countertransference starring New York performance artist Deb Margolin and Short Term 12 which won the Jury Prize.
I missed seeing a screening of recent Mike and George Kuchar short films but did get to take a picture with them… which no one will see because my camera card was corrupted.
Special thanks to my talented young cast Holly Jensen and Alexas Zepeda and my incredible crew.
Uprush will be playing at Friday, June 12th at 10:30 am and Sunday the 14th at 5:30.
The film will play as part of the Hugs Not Drugs short program In Competition. Screenings take place at the Brennan Theater in the Palms Casino and Resort. Check out the film’s page on the Cinvegas web site.
